Problem: Stopping the ‘Discovery & Checkout Drop-off’
Approximately one out of three readers (34%) abandoned book purchases due to fragmented legacy catalogs, lack of digital excerpts, and complex multi-step checkouts. While traditional bookstores exist, they fell short in providing modern mobile-first discovery.
Recognising this gap, we saw a massive opportunity to help readers overall discover literature effortlessly and empower authors with direct reader reach.
Research: Understanding Reader Habits
Understanding how modern readers discover, preview, and purchase books required deep engagement. In the early stages of the project, we interviewed and surveyed over 850 readers across diverse age groups to understand their reading journeys and checkout friction.
Catalog Discovery Friction
58% of readers struggled to find specific editions or related authors across massive 10,000+ title catalogs.
Mobile Checkout Abandonment
64% of cart drop-offs occurred due to multi-page forms lacking 1-tap fast payment integration.
The Need for Sample Previews
72% of readers prefer reading a free 3-page digital excerpt before committing to a physical or digital purchase.

From the beginning, we insisted on readers being able to find any title in under two clicks. Turns out organising over 10,000+ titles across genres is complex. We paid meticulous attention to the information architecture to create frictionless discovery.
We designed an intuitive author portal and thematic categorization system, allowing editorial curators to highlight emerging literature and literary awards dynamically.
Impact: Unlocking Literature for Millions of Readers
The redesigned Sakal Book Publication platform achieved a +48% increase in mobile purchase conversion and reduced checkout drop-offs by 62% within the first 8 weeks of rollout.
The platform achieved an 89 SUS usability score and a 4.0+/5 reader satisfaction rating across over 10,000+ completed book orders.
